Sky Runner

A mixed-reality action game that turns your living room into an evolving world of firefights, floods, and alien invasions, all controlled through precision drone flight.

problem

The original Bomber Drone was a small-scale tech demo with realistic drone controls and five simple levels. It showed promise in flight feel and physicality but lacked world-building, variety, and replayable structure. The challenge was to transform that technical prototype into a complete mixed reality campaign that can work inside anyone's real living space.

solution

We expanded Bomber Drone into Sky Runner, a full mixed reality experience built around four unique campaigns: Fire, Flood, Zombie, and Alien. Each transforms the player's physical space into a new kind of challenge, uniting all modes through a consistent challenge structure and responsive drone mechanics.

As Creative Lead, I guided Sky Runner's transformation from a prototype into a multi-world mixed reality ecosystem. Working closely with the Lead Designer, I helped define the mechanics, tone, and flow of every world so that each one offered a unique living room experience.

In Fire, players douse flaming buildings with water bombs and rescue civilians mid-air. In Flood, the player's room fills with rising water, forcing them to adapt as the environment transforms around them. In Zombie, they defend survivors against encroaching waves of enemies. And in Alien, they uncover the cause behind the chaos, closing the loop of the campaign.

Underneath all of this, we built a procedural spatial system that adapts each level to the player's real environment. Every object follows a set of spatial rules that responds to the player's walls, furniture, and floor space. Moving from a bedroom to a living room completely reshapes the experience. No two sessions are ever the same, which makes Sky Runner as replayable as it is unpredictable.

I also developed the challenge structure that underpins the game, creating a simple rhythm of main objectives and optional bonus goals that invite players to return and perfect their performance. Beyond the core campaign, I helped direct the creation of the sandbox obstacle course creator and multiplayer modes, turning Sky Runner into both a skill-builder and a social experience.

Sky Runner released on the Meta Quest Store in 2024. It has since been adopted by the DNT FPV Drone Association in Hong Kong as a drone training tool for students ages 3 to 81. The game is praised for its flight realism and procedural mixed reality environments.

Flood quickly became one of the most memorable worlds during testing. As the virtual water began to rise, players described genuine feelings of tension and panic, glancing down as their own living rooms slowly filled. The sense of urgency created by the rising flood turned simple rescue missions into desperate scrambles.

In the Alien world, players have to truly master drone control. Alien drones emerge from glowing portals that tear through the player's own ceiling, forcing fast aerial maneuvers and precise counterattacks.

In multiplayer, two players face off in a one-on-one match where timing and positioning are everything. The goal is simple: stun your opponent, drop a bomb on their base, and score the first of three points.
